The basics
Google Business Profile (GBP) is your clinic's public profile on Google. It's the listing that appears when someone searches for your clinic by name—or searches for a service near them. It's the box on the right side of Google Search and the pin on Google Maps.
A GBP can display your clinic name, address, phone number, business hours, photos, reviews, services, and other information that helps patients understand your practice before contacting you.
You don't need a website to have one, and you don't pay Google to create one. Any clinic with a physical practice location can claim and manage a GBP free of charge.
Why it matters
For many local clinics, Google is where the patient journey begins.
Patients often search by service, condition, or location—not by clinic name. Whether someone is looking for an acupuncturist nearby or researching treatment options in your city, your GBP is often the first thing they see.
A complete and well-maintained profile makes it easier for patients to find your clinic, understand what you offer, and decide whether to learn more.
A profile isn't just claimed. It's configured.
Creating a GBP is only the first step.
To appear in relevant searches, Google needs enough structured information to understand what your clinic does, where you serve, and which patients your services are relevant to.
That information comes from how your profile is configured, including: business categories, services, business description, contact information and business hours, photos, and healthcare-specific attributes.
Many clinics stop after filling in the obvious fields. In practice, a thoughtfully configured profile gives Google a much clearer understanding of the practice—and that can make a meaningful difference in local visibility.
Why it's often the best place to start
For many solo and small clinics, GBP offers one of the highest returns for the time invested.
It's free to create, focused on local patients, and doesn't require ongoing weekly work.
Once properly configured, routine maintenance is usually enough to keep it current.
